Lines & Positions
In Ultimate Frisbee, lines are everything. Who’s on the field for offense? Who’s running your zone D? Who are your go-to handlers when the game is on the line? UltiStackr lets you organize your roster into lines so you can plan ahead, adjust on the fly, and keep your rotations tight.
What Are Lines?
Lines are groups of players you designate for specific roles or situations. In a typical Ultimate team, you’ll have at least two:
- O-Line (Offense) — Your offensive unit. These are the players on the field when your team has the pull or is receiving.
- D-Line (Defense) — Your defensive unit. These players take the field when you’re pulling and looking to generate a turn.
Beyond the basics, many teams run additional lines for specific situations — a zone line, a universe point line, or specialty groups for set plays. UltiStackr supports all of it.
Default Lines
When you create a team, UltiStackr automatically sets up two default lines:
- O-Line
- D-Line
These are ready to use immediately. You can start assigning players to them right away, or customize them and add more lines to match your team’s strategy.
Assigning Players to Lines
From the Roster
- Navigate to the Roster tab.
- Open a player’s profile.
- Click Line Assignments or Edit Lines.
- Check the lines you want the player on (a player can be on multiple lines).
- Save.
From the Lines View
- Navigate to the Lines tab (under Team Management or Game Day).
- Select the line you want to edit.
- Click Add Players or drag players from the available roster into the line.
- Save.
Players can belong to multiple lines. Your best handler might be on both the O-Line and your Universe Point line. UltiStackr doesn’t force exclusivity — set it up the way your team actually plays.
Custom Line Creation
Need more than O-Line and D-Line? Create custom lines to match your team’s strategy and structure.
How to Create a Custom Line
- Navigate to the Lines tab or go to Team Settings.
- Click Create Line.
- Enter a line name (e.g., “Zone D”, “Universe Line”, “Endzone Set”, “Huck Line”).
- Optionally add a description to help players and coaches understand the line’s purpose.
- Click Save.
- Start assigning players to your new line.
Common Custom Lines
Here are some lines that competitive teams commonly set up:
| Line Name | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Zone D | Players who run your zone defense |
| Universe Line | Your best 7 for do-or-die points |
| Endzone O | Specialist line for scoring in the red zone |
| Huck Line | Deep-game focused offense with big throwers and fast cutters |
| Handler Line | A handler-heavy line for windy conditions or reset-heavy offense |
| Development Line | Newer players who get reps in lower-pressure situations |
There’s no limit to the number of custom lines you can create. Set up as many as your playbook demands. Just keep the names clear so everyone knows which line they’re on and when.
Editing and Deleting Lines
Editing a Line
- Go to the Lines tab.
- Select the line you want to edit.
- Update the name, description, or player assignments.
- Save your changes.
Deleting a Line
- Go to the Lines tab or Team Settings.
- Select the line you want to remove.
- Click Delete Line.
- Confirm the deletion.
Deleting a line removes it from all game-day and season views. Players who were assigned to that line won’t lose their roster spot — they just won’t be assigned to that line anymore. Historical data referencing the line (past games, stats) is preserved.
The default O-Line and D-Line can be renamed but cannot be deleted. Every team needs at least these two foundational lines.
How Lines Are Used
Lines aren’t just a roster organization tool — they connect to key features across UltiStackr.
Game Day
On game day, lines drive your rotation:
- Pre-game setup — Select which line starts on offense or defense for each point.
- Point-by-point logging — When you log a point, you record which line was on the field.
- Substitutions — Quickly swap in a different line or make individual player changes between points.
- Live lineup view — See your current line at a glance so you’re never scrambling to figure out who’s going in.
See Game Day for the full breakdown of how lines work during games.
Season Planning
Lines evolve across a season:
- Roster-building phase — Create provisional lines and adjust as you finalize your roster.
- Mid-season adjustments — Move players between lines as chemistry develops and matchups change.
- Tournament prep — Set up tournament-specific lines for different opponents or conditions.
See Seasons for how to manage roster and line changes over time.
Practice Planning
Coaches can reference lines in practice plans:
- Set up drills that run by line (e.g., “O-Line runs endzone sets while D-Line does marking drills”).
- Track attendance by line to see which units are getting the most reps.
See Practice Planning for more.
Tips for Managing Lines
- Keep lines updated. After a player status change (injury, promotion from practice squad), review your line assignments to make sure they still reflect reality.
- Name custom lines clearly. “Line 3” doesn’t help anyone. “Zone D - Regionals” tells your players exactly what it’s for.
- Use lines in practice. Running drills by line builds chemistry and helps players understand their game-day roles.
- Don’t over-complicate it. If your team runs a simple O/D split, you don’t need 12 custom lines. Start simple and add lines as your strategy demands.
